Peer Research Clusters
PHD central
These Research Cluster sessions can be in any format (i.e., presenting research, critiques, deep reading sessions, discussion with guests, etc) - whatever furthers your research and/or that of the group. Designating a moderator and note-taker is encouraged. These groups are student-led to foster sustainable research practices, and groups extend well beyond student tenure in the program; however, the Institute supports student efforts with a teaching assistant and guests as requested.
Additionally, we hope these groups will spawn new initiatives, i.e., panels, symposia, reading or writing groups, writing retreats, online publications, screenings, discussion groups, listening sessions, rehearsal sessions, etc. The Institute is happy to support your initiatives regarding platforms, announcements, guests, editors, speakers, etc., by proposal via your Student Representatives. Investing in your research group will lead to long-term support to sustain you in your praxis long after your studies, including informed input from colleagues you have a history and connections with as you continue to exhibit, perform, produce, and publish together.
You can start your own Research Cluster or send an email of interest to the facilitator of an existing Cluster. Here are past and current Research Clusters to give you an idea. You may join as many groups as you like, space permitting. Each class automatically starts with a by-class studio visit cluster.
Please notify us here to form a new Cluster or update existing Clusters with new members, times, titles, and descriptions or ask questions. If you request a teaching assistant, you can contact them directly.
To give you an idea, please see current research clusters in another TT doctoral program. These groups are organized in three categories:

3. RESEARCH GROUPS BY COMMENCEMENT YEAR
Each class is automatically enrolled in a cluster. These groups work as support groups and meet monthly for exchange and information sharing about the milestones and processes as students navigate their first year in the program. Sometimes, they evolve into mutual accountability sessions and study groups and provide opportunities to present material for feedback and rehearse. Each group is different. We have international groups meeting online monthly for a decade or more, additionally rotating hosting the group in their city or participating elsewhere in residencies, panels, activism, publications, exhibitions, etc., annually.
